Thesis Supervision

I am currently mentoring and supervising two thesis groups working on projects that align with my interests in AI/ML, VLSI & FPGA design, IoT, Embedded Systems, CV, and Electronics. Under my guidance, the groups are developing innovative solutions that combine hardware-efficient neural network design and real-time computer vision applications, with a focus on practical deployment in edge computing environments. These efforts aim to bridge the gap between advanced research and real-world applications, fostering technical skills and research experience among the students.

Group 1
FPGA-Based Convolutional Neural Network Accelerator for Bangla Handwritten Digit Recognition
This thesis will focus on designing an FPGA-based accelerator for recognizing Bangla handwritten digits using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). A lightweight CNN architecture, inspired by LeNet, will be trained and quantized to 8-bit precision for efficient hardware deployment. The proposed design will take advantage of FPGA parallelism by utilizing pipelined multiply–accumulate units and optimized memory mapping to achieve low latency and reduced resource usage.

Group 2
YOLOv11-Based Computer Vision Framework for Local Trash Object Categorization in Urban Dhaka Using a Custom Dataset
This thesis will focus on developing a computer vision-based system using Raspberry Pi with Camera module for categorizing local trash objects in urban Dhaka using a custom dataset and the YOLOv11 object detection framework. A tailored dataset of common waste categories, such as plastic bottles, polythene bags, food waste, paper, and textile scraps, will be collected and annotated to train the model. The trained YOLOv11 network will be optimized for real-time inference and deployed on low-cost edge hardware platforms, such as Raspberry Pi or NVIDIA Jetson Nano, to enable efficient on-site trash detection. The proposed design will aim to achieve robust classification performance in diverse environmental conditions while ensuring scalability for smart waste management applications in overpopulated cities.
