International Labor Migration and Economic Development in Bangladesh: Evidence from an ARDL Analysis
Abstract
Migration is occurring continuously on a global scale. Numerous individuals migrate to improve their quality of life and seek superior career prospects in the global labor market, thereby impacting a nation's economic growth in various ways. This study employs the ARDL bounds testing methodology to examine the long-term relationship among international labor migration, remittance inflows, and economic development in Bangladesh. The research demonstrates a significant long-term association among GDP, remittances, and gross capital formation, utilizing secondary time series data from 1994 to 2021. The findings indicate that alleviation of poverty and economic advancement are fundamentally reliant on remittances. The research recommends enhancing labor migration rules and training programs to capitalize on remittance opportunities. This study addresses a significant gap in the existing literature and offers policy-relevant insights for the sustainable economic development of Bangladesh.
